Tennessee Department of Health Receives Komen Grants

From the website of TN.Gov!

Good news grants for Tennessee Department of Health for women screening.

The State Department of Health’s Tennessee Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program has been awarded five one-year grants totaling $206,950 from Tennessee affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the international organization dedicated to ending breast cancer. Grants have been awarded in Knoxville, Chattanooga, Davidson County, the Tri-Cities area and Tennessee’s Upper Cumberland region to provide breast cancer screening for uninsured women.

“It is so important that all women have these screening tests to detect cancer earlier when it can be most easily treated,” said Susan R. Cooper, MSN, RN, Commissioner of Health. “These grants will help provide life-saving services to women who might otherwise go without the tests.”

The grant awards are intended to address the screening and diagnostic needs of women ages 50 through 64 who are uninsured and below a certain income level, based on family size. The state program is particularly interested in screening women who have never been screened for breast cancer or who have not been screened in two or more years, as these women are at greater risk for cancer.

“We are extremely grateful to Komen for its generous support of the state program,” said Mary Jane Dewey, director of the Tennessee Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program. “Without it, several hundred women in our state could not be served.”

Dewey also said that 100 percent of the Komen money will be used to pay for basic screening and diagnostic tests for women with suspicious findings. There are Komen Affiliates in 62 Tennessee counties. State and federal funds are available to cover services for women in the remaining 33 Tennessee counties.

Each year, about 14,000 women receive services through Tennessee’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program, with only a small number needing further tests or treatment. To learn more about the state program, call 1-877-969-6636 or visit http://health.state.tn.us/BCC/index.htm .

Contact your local county health department to schedule an appointment or to get information about eligibility.

The Tennessee Komen Affiliates are part of the 125-member Affiliate network of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting to end breast cancer forever. Local affiliates serve as the face and voice of Komen’s global breast

cancer movement, mobilizing millions of everyday people through activities like the Komen Race for the Cure® Series, the world’s largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer.

The "good ole boys" group rears it's ugly head!

This morning on Meet the Press, Former Senator Tom Daschle leads the group of those showing their bravado against a woman leading this country.

Tim Russert asked Daschle about the 17,000,000 votes that Senator Clinton has won. Which is the popular vote, which is more than Senator Obama has, and Daschle's reply was, "well I think we need to get past that".

"GET PAST THAT", isn't that the Republican way in stealing the 2000 and 2004 elections, yet words out of a former Democratic Senator?.

Well they just got past them didn't they. It didn't matter what the people want, it only matters how they can destroy the vote of the citizenry to acheive their goal, "winning" at all cost.

I am ashamed to hear a former democratic Senator utter such complete and utter nonsense from his mouth and on national TV.

Shame on you Tom Daschle, I hope it will be worth your reward, whatever it may be, to turn your back on the voting citizenry of the country. You sir are an example of the change to the entire system that needs to take place. You sir are part of the past that we can not get by, you employ old tactics and republican ways to secure your candidate a win for the nomination.

Democratic rules committee thinks they rule.

I am so disgusted with the DNC appointed Rules and By-laws committee today that if there were a viable third party candidate, I would consider leaving the Democratic party.

Back room decisions, and people who think they have a right and power to take american voters decisions away. Haven't we had enough of that?

Make this country a true democracy and go to one person one vote, do away with the
electoral college completely.

Do away with this system that leaves open doors for hungry power seeking individuals to continue to rule over the masses of the citizenry.

One vote across the country on the same day, do away with the millions spent on the campaign and primary farce.

Young Democrats National Meeting soon in Nashville

The Young Democrats National meeting to be hosted by the Tennessee Young Democrats.
It is a good thing that so many young democrats will be visiting Nashville. We need more and more of the population to be involved in everyday politics and starting with the youth is a great way for more participation for their lifetimes, hopefully. So if you are within driving distance, spread the word, the date is coming up soon.

2008 Spring National Conference in Nashville, TN
May 30 - June 1, 2008 in Nashville, TN

From an email:
Less than two weeks away from the 2008 Spring National Conference in Nashville, TN and we have a very exciting program planned.

Here is a preview of conference events you won't want to miss out on:

Conference Kickoff and Welcome Reception:
Get things started right by coming to Friday night's Conference Kickoff where you will get a preview of the weekend's events. After that, head over to the Tennessee Young Democrats' Welcome Reception for some drinks, some mingling, and some of Nashville's famed local musical talent.

Luncheon with Governor Phil Bredesen
YDA is honored to have Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen addressing conference attendees during our Luncheon. Come hear him discuss his rise from an unknown candidate to one of the most popular Governors in either party.
YDA's Campaign Training Peer-to-Palooza
Much like that music festival with a strikingly similar title, YDA's Peer-to-Palooza gives you the opportunity to experience multiple youth vote, peer-to-peer, campaign trainings and info booths in one place, at one time. It's your one-stop-shop for campaign skills that will fully prepare you for our Young Voter Revolution.
Young Voter Revolution Summit
After attending the Peer-to-Palooza you've been through the "how." With the Young Voter Revolution Summit, we are going to see how much. Kick off the 2008 YDA Campaign by creating vote pledge goals and events for your caucus, state or local chapter.
The Amazing Vote Pledge Scavenger Hunt
Think Amazing Race combined with a scavenger hunt. Throw in a few hundred young people on the streets of Music City USA, vote pledge forms, and only an hour to complete the assigned tasks, and you're destined for a wild one-hour adventure with your fellow YD's. The young people of Nashville won't know what hit 'em.
